JUNE DAHN - SHAWNEE DALMATIANS

June Dahn (and her late husband, Bill) joined the newly-formed Western Reserve Dalmatian Club in 1966. This was shortly after they acquired their first Dalmatian from Bud & Betty Doyle. June & Bill were living on Shawnee Trail in Middleburg Heights and decided on Shawnee as their kennel name. Jubi, Brigadier's Jubi of Shawnee, became the foundation bitch for Shawnee Dalmatians.

Over the years, June and Bill were very active in the WRDC serving in every capacity from President, Secretary, Match Chair and Show Chair to Newsletter Editor. June continues to be actively involved in club activities and serves as our Breeder Referral and Newsletter Co-Editor. June is also a member of the Dalmatian Club of America and the Owner Handlers Association of America - Buckeye North Chapter.

Breeding under the Shawnee Kennel name, June and Bill bred 6+ litters. June finished 5 Champions and put two Companion Dog titles on her dogs. June recently commented that Bill did not have “the knack” for showing, but was an excellent groomer. Shawnee Dalmatians can be found in many of the pedigrees of dogs owned by current WRDC members.

When June & Bill bred Maggie to Ch. Lord Jim, they decided to keep two puppies from that litter for six months. They wanted to see which one they liked best at size months, however both Jamie and Chiquita became members of their family. Between the two littermates, Jamie became the top winner and finished his AKC championship at eight months of age at the Chicagoland Dalmatian Club Specialty. Later as a special, Jamie won two specialty shows two times each. In 1974 and 1975, Jamie won Best of Breed at the Dalmatian Club of Detroit specialties, and also those same years went Best of Breed at the Chicagoland Dalmatian Club Specialties.

Jamie was a notable sire of several champions.

In 1975, June and Bill decided to travel to Westminster with Jamie. June still refers to this as one of her most memorable wins with Jamie being owner-handled to Best of Breed at Westminster. Jamie was always owner-handled by June! Jamie is pictured in the Westminster Kennel Club 100th Year Celebration Book.

Another top winner bred by Shawnee was Cappy. In 1985, Cappy (handled by June) won Best in Sweepstakes at the WRDC Specialty and in 1986 went Best of Breed at WRDC. He also went Best of Breed at the Dalmatian Club of Southern New England Specialty that same year. Cappy was shown occasionally by his friend, Sam Hart.

June says that she has many fond memories of the Western Reserve Dalmatian Club. Her fondest memories are of the wonderful friends she and Bill met through the club. Some of those friends are no longer with us, but they will always be remembered.
